Parent Bulletin - No 3Third Letter from the Gnurad-Gundidj Campus and Community

"Hello Again!"

Third Letter Home - March 2, 2017

Hello again from the community of the Gnurad Gundidj Campus! What a busy term we have had already. By the time you read this, the first expedition groups have headed-out and returned. They have ridden around our local Lakes and Craters environment, camping out at Glenfyne and put into practice all the skills learned in their expedition preparation sessions. The students were well prepared and so full of excitement, apprehension, “coolness” and worry, all mixed into one! I know, however, that what they will learn through their undertaking will put them in great stead. One of the concepts we use in designing our type of education experience is to move from the known to the unknown. In moving to, and living at, the Gnurad Gundidj Campus, students initially are in a much unknown environment (socially, physically, emotionally, geographically and so on), which they soon become comfortable and familiar with. I am sure this is conveyed in correspondence, and will be obvious at the visiting weekend.

The visiting weekend is this weekend and we look forward to seeing you here. Can I stress that it is a family occasion, for parents’ benefit, and should be limited to immediate family members.

Your sons and daughters can be collected between 9.00am & 10.00am Saturday 20th August and returned at 4pm on Sunday 21st August. The Campus will be vacant outside of these hours.

School For Student Leadership

School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education initiative offering a unique residential education experience for year nine students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students' home regions. There are four campuses in iconic locations across Victoria. The Alpine School Campus is located at Dinner Plain in the Victorian Alps. Snowy River Campus is near the mouth of the Snowy River at Marlo in east Gippsland. The third site is adjacent to Mount Noorat near Camperdown in Victoria’s Western District, and is called Gnurad-Gundidj. After consultation with the local aboriginal community, this name represents both the indigenous name of the local area and an interpretation of the statement "belonging to this place". The fourth and most recently opened campus is Don Valley Campus, situated on land that was once known as Haining Farm in the Yarra Ranges.

Our school community acknowledges the Gunaikurnai, Bidawel and Gundijmara people as the traditional custodians of the land upon which our school campuses are built. We pay our respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their Elders past and present, and especially whose children attend our school.
